Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi is a scholar who needs no introduction. His stature as a preeminent jurist, an ascetic and an imam are uncontested.

Author of many brilliant works, including multi-volume tomes, he wrote extensively on a variety of Islamic sciences. But perhaps his most well known, is also his shortest – a collection of 40 Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The Hadith gathered within the collection encapsulate the very fundamentals of Islam, touching on multiple facets of the Islamic religion, as a world view and as a way of life — its creed, legalism, spirituality and the Islamic etiquette.

When read and sincerely implemented, they have the potential to change a person’s life, igniting their heart with Prophetic Love and a sincere desire for emulating the noble Prophetic character.

However, the brevity of these Hadith presents a challenge. Since they are representative of the Prophet’s compendious speech, it requires that the translation be done while accounting for its linguistic precision, and with a deep understanding of the meanings of the Arabic words and idioms.

This translation of the 40 Hadith is valuable because the translator, Mawlana Abu Hasan, is immensely capable on both fronts. As with all his works, footnotes have been provided wherever the main text needs context or elucidation.

Another feature of this work is the inclusion of the final chapter (omitted by most translators), in which Imam Nawawi has explained many of the lesser known words and names of some narrators, the correct pronunciations of both, and provided contexts for hadith where needed.
